Uk Basic Bank Account, Refused Bank Accounts, Poor credit history

Basic bank accounts for people with a less than perfect credit historyWhy do I need a basic UK bank account?

For whatever reason, you may of already decided that a current account is not for you at this time. But a basic bank account may suit you better.

A basic bank account allows you to have your wages, benefits, State pension and tax credits paid directly into your account. It costs you nothing to pay cheques into a basic bank account, although you will have to wait at least a few days for the money to be available in your account. You can take your money out at cash machines by using a cash card, check with your bank if there are any cash machine restrictions or charges.

A basic bank account also allows you to pay your bills by direct debit – you can actually save money on things like gas and electricity by using direct debit. Some banks will also allow you to pay your bills by standing order.  They can be an excellent part of a successful personal debt help plan.

How much money do I need to start an account?

Most banks don't require you to put in any money to open a basic bank account although some do ask that you deposit one pound to get you started. However, once you’ve started the account, you don’t have to keep paying money in regularly.

Do basic bank accounts cost money?

You will not be charged for opening a basic bank account and most withdrawals from cash machines are free, but you should check this when you initially open the account. There are some cash machines that may charge for withdrawing money but these do not tend to be ones belonging to a bank or building society. If it is a one that charges, a warning on the screen should tell you that a charge will be made and ask if you want to continue. Most banks will charge for some of their services however. For example, if the bank has to refuse, set up, cancel or alter direct debits or standing orders, they will often make a charge. Check whether the bank that you want to use charges for these services.

Can I be refused a basic bank account?

Basic bank accounts should be available to almost everybody although the bank may carry out a credit check to see if you have outstanding county court judgments or have been made bankrupt. Even if you do, you may still be able to open a basic bank account.
