Guide to tracing lost financial assets

The information provided below is intended as a guide to help trace lost assets. There are, of course, no guarantees of success but when writing to any of the addresses provided you should include as much information as possible and in particular give your full name, address, and date of birth.

Bank accounts

A 'Dormant Bank Accounts Form' is available from most bank branches. If you do not know in which bank the account may have been held, you should contact the British Bankers' Association.

British Bankers Association, 105-108 Old Broad Street, London EC2N 1EX

Tel: 0207 216 8909

Web:  www.bba.org.uk

Building Society Accounts

To trace dormant Building Society Accounts you should contact the Buildings Societies' Association.

Building Societies' Association, 6th Floor, York House, 23 Kingsway, London, WC2B 6UJ

Tel: 0207 437 0655     Fax: 0207 734 6416

www.bsa.org.uk

Life Insurance Polices

Write to the head office of the insurance company named on the policy and send a photocopy of the policy. You should address your letter to the Customer Service Manager and give as much information as possible. If you cannot trace the insurance company, it may have been taken over, in which case the Association of British Insurers (ABI) may be able to give you the new name and address.  Tel: 0207 600 3333

National Savings and Premium Bonds

To trace National Savings and Premium Bonds use the Tracing Service Request Form that can be obtained by either phoning the National Savings Office or by visiting their website.

National Savings, FREEPOST BJ2092, Blackpool FY3 9XR

Tel: 0845 964 5000

www.nationalsavings.co.uk

Pensions

If you or your partner worked for a company and believe that you may be entitled to a pension, you should complete a tracing request form available from the Pension Tracing Service. The Pensions Tracing Service should be able to provide you with the name of the Pension Scheme Administrator, if you know the name of the company you worked for.

The Pension Scheme Administrator will advise if you have any deferred pension benefits.

The Pension Tracing Service, Whitley Road, Newcastle upon Tyne. NE98 1BA

Tel: 0845 600 2537

Windfall Shares

If you believed you have missed a distribution of free shares by a building society, write to the head office of the company with which you had an account. Address your letter to the Company Secretary and provide details of your account and passbook or policy number.

In tracking down lost assets, remember you can only research those assets to which you may be entitled. You will need to provide specific information. Just having a passbook or policy does not mean you are entitled to something; it may have already been paid out, but it is probably worth checking.
